LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 9, 2021) – Oklahoma Christian finished at No. 14 in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll for NCAA Division II softball, which was released Wednesday.
OC (38-9) was at No. 4 – the program's highest ranking ever – in the final regular-season poll. The Eagles were the No. 1 seed in the Division II South Central Regional, in which they reached the winners' bracket final before falling to eventual national champion West Texas A&M and then to regional host Texas A&M-Commerce. OC had beaten TAMUC in the Eagles' regional opener.
The poll's top eight teams were regional champions who advanced to the Division II Championship – West Texas A&M (43-12), Biola (Calif.) (26-16), Augustana (S.D.) (49-8), North Georgia (43-8), Grand Valley State (Mich.) (45-10), Valdosta State (Ga.) (38-11), Saint Anselm (N.H.) (33-7) and West Chester (Pa.) (34-16). TAMUC (33-18) and Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) (38-8) rounded out the top 10.
OC went 2-2 this season against West Texas A&M and 3-1 against Texas A&M-Commerce, sweeping both in Lone Star Conference regular-season play. The Eagles had an 8-5 record against teams that finished in the final top 25, having gone 1-2 vs. No. 12 Concordia-Irvine (Calif.) (34-13) and 2-0 against No. 17 Texas-Tyler (33-7), the LSC regular-season champion.
Two other LSC teams, Angelo State (Texas) and Texas A&M-Kingsville, received votes in the poll but didn't crack the top 25. The only other Oklahoma team in the final poll was No. 22 Central Oklahoma (36-14).
The poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, with two representing each of the eight NCAA regions. OC appeared in the top 25 in every poll during the 2021 season.
