CANYON, Texas (May 7, 2021) – Freshman
Chaney Martin gave Oklahoma Christian its first team points of the Lone Star Conference Outdoor Championships with a fourth-place finish in the decathlon on Friday at the West Texas A&M Track and Field Complex.
OC sprinter
Verrell McBride advanced to the final in both the 100 meters and 200 meters while three 800-meter runners for the Eagles –
Dylan Burrows,
Brady Aderholt and
Ethan Anthony – also moved into Saturday's event final.
Martin, from West Plains, Mo., started the day ninth in the 11-man decathlon field but zoomed up the standings during the final three events, finishing with a career-best score of 6,445 points to meet the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard in the grueling 10-event discipline.
He took third in the pole vault at 14 feet, 5¼ inches (4.40 meters), fifth in the javelin at 151 feet, 6 inches (46.18 meters) and second in the 1,500 meters in 4:48.65. His strong performance in the latter event lifted him past Creed Goode of Angelo State (Texas) by three points for fourth place, earning five team points for the Eagles.
McBride, a junior from Norman, Okla., took sixth in the preliminary round of the 100 (10.57 seconds) and 200 (21.51 seconds), meeting the Division II provisional qualifying standard in the 100.
OC loaded up in the 800 meters, entering four runners, and it paid off as three of them finished in the top six in the prelim. Sophomore
Dylan Burrows of Melbourne, Australia, was second (1:52.02), senior
Brady Aderholt of Vernon, Texas, was fifth (1:54.08) and sophomore
Ethan Anthony of Mornington, Australia, was sixth (1:55.73).

Colton Meyers of Allen, Texas, finished fifth in the 10,000 meters, the final race of the session, with a time of 31:59.41, earning four team points for the Eagles. The race didn't begin until well after midnight, mostly due to a lightning delay caused by a thunderstorm that passed through the Canyon area.
In the first running event of the meet, OC freshman
Griffin Chesire of Eldoret, Kenya, took 10th place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:50.46.
The meet will continue Saturday, with field events starting at 11 a.m. and running events starting at 4:30 p.m.
