LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 5, 2021) – The loss that ended Oklahoma Christian's 16-game winning streak didn't hurt the Eagles in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division II softball poll, which was released Wednesday.
OC (34-6) remained at No. 6, which is the highest NAIA or NCAA Division II ranking in the program's history. In the Eagles' only games last week, they split with Lone Star Conference rival Cameron on Saturday, losing 6-1 before winning 3-1.
The poll of 16 Division II coaches – two from each of the division's eight regions – was completed before OC's 6-1, 1-0 sweep of then-No. 3 Texas-Tyler on Tuesday. Texas-Tyler (33-7) moved up a spot in this week's poll, with 382 points, trailing only unanimous No. 1 Augustana (S.D.) (36-4) with 400 points.
Besides OC and Texas-Tyler, other LSC teams in poll included No. 9 West Texas A&M (32-10), No. 12 Texas A&M-Commerce (26-15) and No. 21 Angelo State (Texas) (31-11), while Texas A&M-Kingsville received votes. One other South Central Region team was ranked – No. 16 Colorado Mesa (34-2).
After Augustana and Texas-Tyler, North Georgia (35-5) was third with 370 points. Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) (35-5) made a huge seven-spot jump to No. 4 with 341 points, while Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) (36-6) moved up two spots to fifth with 319 points. OC had 305 points, while Indianapolis (Ind.) (37-5) fell to seventh with 301 points.
Valdosta State (Ga.) (32-6) fell six spots to No. 8 with 288 points. West Texas A&M had 275 point and Young Harris (Ga.) (30-9) rounded out the top 10 with 264 points. OC's local rival, Central Oklahoma (32-10), was ranked 15th.
With its regular season complete, OC will turn its attention to the Lone Star Conference tournament, which the Eagles will host at Tom Heath Field on May 13-15.
