Ahead of big week, Eagles hold steady in softball poll

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 21, 2021) – With the biggest week of the softball season here for Oklahoma Christian, the Eagles will enter it as a top-10 squad.

OC stayed at No. 10 in the latest edition of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division II poll, released Wednesday. Coming to visit the Eagles for key Lone Star Conference doubleheaders in the coming days will be No. 3 Texas-Tyler (Friday) and No. 6 Texas A&M-Commerce (Sunday).

Last week, OC (31-5) swept a pair of road doubleheaders at Texas-Permian Basin (13-0 and 16-3) and Western New Mexico (7-3 and 18-9). The Eagles have won a school-record 14 straight games and are one of only four Division II teams to have won at least 30 games this season, joining No. 5 Indianapolis (Ind.), No. 7 Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) and unranked Southeastern Oklahoma State.

In addition to the three top-10 teams, the LSC had three other ranked squads in No. 12 West Texas A&M (26-10), No. 23 Angelo State (Texas) (26-10) and No. 24 Texas A&M-Kingsville (24-11). The six LSC teams joined another South Central Region squad, No. 17 Colorado Mesa (26-2), in the poll.

Besides OC, only one other Oklahoma team was ranked – No. 16 Central Oklahoma (27-9) of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Augustana (S.D.), with a 27-3 record, remained atop the poll for a third straight week, followed by Valdosta State (Ga) (29-3), Texas-Tyler (27-5), North Georgia (25-5), Indianapolis (31-2), TAMUC (25-10), Lincoln Memorial (34-5), Rollins (Fla.) (14-1), Young Harris (Ga.) (26-7) and OC.

The NFCA poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, with two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.
