McBride named as Eagle of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 18, 2021) – A standout performance that put Oklahoma Christian sprinter Verrell McBride in position to perhaps qualify for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships earned him recognition Sunday as the Eagle of the Week.

McBride, a junior from Norman, shined in both the 100 meters and 200 meters for the Eagles during a meet in his hometown, the Sooner Invitational at the University of Oklahoma's John Jacobs Track on Saturday.

On a cool day with overcast skies and temperatures in the 50s, McBride beat six NCAA Division I runners while winning the 200 in 21.19 seconds, a career-best time that easily met the provisional qualifying standard for the Division II postseason and ranks as the 13th-best time this season at that level.

McBride also finished fifth in the 100-meter final in 10.87 seconds, beating a pair of Division I runners and finishing behind only three runners from OU and a non-collegiate runner. He had posted a career-best 100 time of 10.72 in the preliminary round.

The Eagle of the Week award recognizes the top performer in OC athletics for the previous week. The honor is presented each week at least one OC athletic team is in competition.
