Wheeler resigns as OC volleyball coach

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 14, 2021) – Barry Wheeler, who helped revive Oklahoma Christian's volleyball program after a long dormancy, has resigned as the Eagles' head coach, OC Athletic Director David Lynn said Wednesday.

Wheeler arrived at OC in February 2019 and recruited two classes of players for the program, which hadn't competed since 1983. The 2020 fall season was wiped out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Eagles – with a squad consisting mostly of freshmen – made their return this year during a spring-semester campaign, posting a 6-12 record and qualifying for the Lone Star Conference tournament.

Wheeler previously coached collegiate programs at Rochester (Mich.) and Crowley's Ridge (Ark.), as well as at three high schools in Missouri.

"We appreciate the hard work coach Wheeler has contributed toward our program and his efforts in re-establishing volleyball on our campus," Lynn said. "We wish him well in his future endeavors."

Lynn said a national search to fill the position had begun.
