OC alum, former Marine general inducted into Tulsa schools’ athletic hall

TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 21, 2021) – Former Oklahoma Christian basketball player and retired U.S. Marine Maj. Gen. John Admire has been inducted into the Tulsa Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame.

The ceremony was held June 10 in Tulsa. The TPS Athletic Hall of Fame was started in 2013 and now has 118 members. Requirements for nomination include exemplifying the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and moral character; significant and/or long-term contributions to athletic endeavors; and acknowledged leadership in a chosen field or community, state and national presence.

Admire graduated in 1960 from Tulsa's Daniel Webster High School, where he led the school's basketball team in scoring and assists and earned All-City honors as a senior.

He played as a freshman for what then was known as Oklahoma Christian College during the 1960-61 season, the first in which the Eagles included juniors on their roster. He averaged 4.3 points per game and shot 50 percent from the field (32 of 64) for a team that finished 24-2, playing a mix of teams from junior colleges, four-year schools and military bases.

He attended OC but didn't play during the 1961-62 school year, later transferring to the University of Oklahoma, from which he graduated in 1967.

Admire went on to a 33-year career in the Marines, serving five combat tours and spending time as the Senior White House Military Aide for then-President Jimmy Carter. After his retirement in 1998, he authored the book "Darker Than Dark," a fictionalized story of the Vietnam War based on his actual battles and personal experiences.

He's also a member of the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame, among other honors.
