OKLAHOMA CITY (June 22, 2020) – Renovation work is underway in the Payne Athletic Center on a locker room that will serve as the home base for Oklahoma Christian's revived women's volleyball program.
The project, which is funded by donations from OC alumni Dewey and Gina Leggett and Harry and Brenda Patterson, will include the addition of 24 individual lockers to what has served in recent years as the women's visitor's locker room.
The lockers – built by OC volleyball coach
Barry Wheeler and his father-in-law, Neil Gardner – are 16 inches wide, 20 inches deep and 72 inches high and will include USB ports, charging stations for phones and laptops, two shelves, a clothes rod, a hook on the door and ventilation in the lower compartment. The lockers will have electronic locks, Wheeler said, and will include a photo decal of the player using the locker.
Other improvements include the reversal of the exterior door from the PAC's pool to the locker room; the installation of a new privacy wall and the addition of a countertop, mirrors and power outlets along that wall; the addition of a whiteboard and television, along with amenities such as a small refrigerator, a microwave and some tables; and the construction of a storage closest for the volleyball program.
In the locker room's restroom, one sink will be removed while a counter with mirrors and outlets will be added. The locker room's shower area also is being remodeled, with new hardware for the showers being installed.
The locker room will continue to be used by visiting women's teams in other sports.
