Former OC softball player makes USSSA national slow-pitch list

Former OC softball standout Courtney Starr is on a national list of elite slow-pitch players.
VIERA, Fla. (Nov. 2, 2020) – Former Oklahoma Christian softball standout Courtney Starr now is considered among the best slow-pitch players in the U.S., according to a list released by the U.S. Specialty Sports Association.

The USSSA, which helps govern amateur slow-pitch softball in the U.S., named Starr to its 2021 Women's Major Player Watch List. She currently plays for Xtreme/Athlon/ASP, a team which finished second in the USSSA A world tournament last month after entering the event seeded 16th in a 17-team field. Starr was named to the all-tournament team.

Starr said her team plans to compete next season at the Conference level, the highest in USSSA slow-pitch softball, and is scheduled to play in tournaments throughout the U.S.

After her playing career at OC, Starr – from Des Moines, Iowa – was an assistant coach at Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College from August 2015 to April 2018.

"During the time I was coaching, I slowly got involved in the slow-pitch community here in Iowa," she said. "Coaching and playing just didn't work out for me because of conflicting schedules. Me being the competitor I am, I needed to keep playing somehow."

Starr played for OC from 2012 through 2015, helping the Eagles win two National Christian College Athletic Association regional titles and finish as the NCCAA runner-up in 2014 and 2015. She made the first-team All-NCCAA Central Region list and the NCAA Championship all-tournament team as a senior. Her 44 doubles rank her No. 2 on OC's career list in that statistical category and her career batting average of .342 is 12th-best in program history.
