SHAWNEE, Okla. (March 14, 2019) – Oklahoma Christian freshmen
Jonathan Olsson and
Keenan Lee each won a field-event title on Thursday and
Ian Colbert won in the 400 meters as the Eagles opened their 2019 outdoor season at the Oklahoma Baptist Early Outdoor Invitational.
Competitors battled temperatures in the low 50s and a fierce northwest wind that gusted above 30 mph, which was enough to move the pole vault indoors. Lee, from Edmond, prevailed in a field of six with a top effort of 14 feet, 3¼ inches (4.35 meters).
Outdoors, Olsson, from Emporia, Kan., unleased a javelin throw of 166 feet, 3 inches (50.67 meters) to top a field of 14 men. He also placed 10th in both the hammer and shot put.
OC had another strong finish in another field event, the triple jump, as
Joseph Owens – a sophomore from Mobile, Ala. – placed second with a mark of 42 feet (12.80 meters).
In the running events, Colbert, a sophomore from Frisco, Texas, turned in OC's top performance, topping an 18-man field in the 400 meters with a time of 49.91 seconds. The Eagles went 3-4-5 in the 100 meters with sophomore
Andre Norman (10.98 seconds), freshman
Verrell McBride (11.01 seconds) and Owens (11.06 seconds).
Freshmen
Jelte van Atten (fourth in 2:02.25) and
Nick Parizek (eighth in 2:04.75) gave OC a pair of high finishers in the 35-man field in the 800 meters. Sophomore
Chase Cate finished ninth among 31 runners in the 1,500 meters in 4:21.91.
Sophomore
Javier Hernandez of Allentown, Pa., took second among 11 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.66 seconds.
OC's next meet will be the Oral Roberts Invitational, set for March 29-30 in Tulsa.
