Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb.11, 2019) – It wasn't a particularly memorable day for Oklahoma Christian's softball team, but it was one from which coach
Shanon Hays hopes the Lady Eagles can take lessons.
OC jumped to an early lead, but Texas Woman's rallied with three runs in the final two innings to pull out a 4-3 win on Monday afternoon in the Raising Cain's Edmond Regional Festival I at Tom Heath Field.
The loss ended what was the second-best start to a season in the history of OC softball, as the Lady Eagles fell to 6-1. OC had been scheduled to play a late game against No. 14-ranked Tarleton State (Texas) – an opponent Hays had added in hopes of improving his team's strength of schedule – but with thunderstorms in the area, that game was cancelled and won't be made up.
Hays said OC's lack of offensive production in key situations against Texas Woman's (2-6) proved costly. OC left two runners on base in five innings, including both the first and second innings, when the Lady Eagles scored all their runs and could have potentially blown the game open.
Bailey Strecker singled home
Brie Dunckel in the first and
Kayla Eichler drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Sydney Johnson singled and scored for the Pioneers in the top of the second, but OC went up 3-1 in the bottom of the inning when
Sierra Schultz raced home from third base on an error. Schultz and
Hunter Strickland each had two of OC's seven hits.
Solid pitching from
Kali Crandall, who gave up only one run and one hit in 4 1/3 innings, helped OC milk that lead until the sixth, when Johnson reached on a fielder's-choice grounder, moved to third base on a pair of errors and then scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Lindy Kennedy.
OC left-hander
Madison Hagood (2-1) entered to start the seventh inning in the circle and quickly recorded two outs, but the strike zone shrunk and the Pioneers took advantage, drawing three walks sandwiched around a hit batsman. Two of those walks came with the bases loaded, putting Texas Woman's ahead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Texas Woman's reliever Jordan Kisselburg (2-1) hit OC leadoff batter
Lindsey Stoeckel with a pitch and Eichler sacrificed Stoeckel to second base, but she advanced no further.
OC will have a chance to quickly bounce back, as the Lady Eagles will host Southwest Baptist (Mo.) for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
