Box Score 2 DENTON, Texas (March 7, 2018) – Oklahoma Christian's bats were rolling on Wednesday at Texas Woman's, piling up 20 runs and 28 hits in 12 innings. But that proved enough for only a doubleheader split at Pioneer Field.
OC routed Texas Woman's 15-4 in five innings in the opener, but the Pioneers rode a big fourth inning to beat the Lady Eagles 7-5 in the second game to salvage a split.
OC (13-12) has had considerable success against Texas Woman's (11-7) the past two seasons. Last year, the Lady Eagles won three of five meetings against the Pioneers, including two run-rule wins, but it was Texas Woman's who received a NCAA Division II tournament berth and eventually made a run to a super regional event.
In the opener, the Lady Eagles seemed to pick up where they left off against the Pioneers last season, pounding three Texas Woman's pitchers for 18 hits, including three each by
Kaylie Upton,
Bailey Strecker,
Lacey Davidson and
Payton Sabolski.
Sabolski and Denny, both freshmen, each had four RBIs, with Denny hitting her first career home run, a two-run shot in the third inning. Two of Strecker's hits were doubles.
Kaylie Upton (8-2) pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win for OC, while starter Abby Walker (2-5 gave up 15 hits in four innings of work and took the loss.
The second game started well for OC, which jumped to a 3-1 lead after the top of the third inning, taking advantage of four early errors by the Pioneers. But a four-run fourth inning, keyed by a bases-loaded double by Tylia Sylestine, put Texas Woman's up 6-3.
Down 7-3 in the seventh, OC rallied with run-scoring hits by
Bridget White and
Hunter Strickland and brought the potential tying run to the plate, but Texas Woman's pitcher Cheyenne Mahy (4-1) kept the Lady Eagles from scoring again and finished a complete game.
OC starter
Madison Hagood (3-5) took the loss.
The Lady Eagles will be off until next Wednesday, when they visit Heartland Conference rival Newman (Kan.) for a doubleheader.
