Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (March 5, 2018) – As they prepared to embark on a 16-game road stretch that well could define their softball season, the Oklahoma Christian Lady Eagles picked up a pair of much-needed wins on Monday at
Tom Heath Field.
It wasn't always pretty, but OC held off Heartland Conference foe St. Edward's (Texas) 2-1 and 3-1 for its first doubleheader sweep of a league foe this season.
OC (12-11, 4-4 Heartland) won't play at home again until April 6, and coming off a week in which the Lady Eagles went 1-3 in a pair of key home doubleheaders, two wins were a much-needed salve. But they did not come easily against St. Edward's (2-17, 2-6).
The Hilltoppers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the first game when OC pitcher
Madison Nordyke (2-5) hit Shelby Janda with a pitch and Sara Machado followed with a run-scoring double to center field.
St. Edward's pitcher Reagan Carter (1-6) nearly made that run stand up. She wriggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning, and blanked the Lady Eagles again after they put two runners on with one out.
OC finally broke through in the sixth.
Kaylie Upton led off with a double down the right-field line and Nordyke followed with an infield single. Both pinch-runner
Daelyn Denny and Nordyke moved up on a wild pitch, with Denny eventually scoring on a bloop single by
Kayla Eichler and Nordyke doing so on a fielder's choice grounder by
Hunter Strickland.
Left-hander
Madison Hagood recorded a 1-2-3 seventh inning in the circle to record the save.
The Lady Eagles quickly jumped on St. Edward's starter Olivia Burdick (1-7) in the first inning, taking advantage of a key throwing error and sending nine batters to the plate while scoring three runs.
Bailey Strecker and Nordyke each hit a run-scoring single during the inning.
That proved to be enough of a lead for OC's pitchers. Upton (7-2) allowed four hits and one run in four innings of work before giving way to Hagood, who allowed only one hit over three innings to pick up her second save of the day and fifth of the season.
OC will begin its month on the road with a doubleheader on Wednesday at Texas Woman's.
