Box Score 2 AUSTIN, Texas (March 23, 2018) – Seniors
Sheridan Fuller and
Madison Nordyke came up with key sixth-inning hits and Nordyke finished off the game in the circle to lead Oklahoma Christian to a 2-1 win over St. Edward's (Texas) on Friday afternoon.
That win completed a doubleheader sweep for OC, which held on for a 6-4 win in the opener at windy Diane Daniels Field thanks in good part to late-inning RBI hits by
Bailey Strecker and Nordyke.
OC (18-16, 8-7 Heartland Conference) moved past Texas A&M International into fourth place in the league standings. The Lady Eagles, who have beaten St. Edward's (3-28, 3-12) four times in as many meetings this softball season, now are two games above .500 for the first time since March 7.
OC will look to complete the series, and season, sweep Saturday at noon.
Bridget White homered in the first inning of the second game off St. Edward's starter Olivia Burdick (1-13) to put the Lady Eagles ahead. The Hilltoppers scratched out a run off OC starter
Madison Hagood on a walk, wild pitch, sacrifice bunt and passed ball, but couldn't score again despite advancing runners to third base in both the third and fourth innings.
Nordyke (4-5) relieved Hagood with two outs in the fifth and allowed only two hits the rest of the way, while also delivering with her bat. Fuller hit a two-out double to left field in the sixth and Nordyke followed with an infield single that scored Fuller.
Valerie Brant led off the bottom of the seventh with a single for the Hilltoppers, but one out later, she overran second base on a single by Deja Lee and was caught in a rundown for the second out. Nordyke coaxed a fly ball from Kathryn Connelly for the final out.
In the opener,
Kayla Eichler hit a third-inning RBI double off St. Edward's starter Keely Frazier (1-5) to put OC ahead and
Hunter Strickland followed with a two-run single to center field to make it 3-0. St. Edward's answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, with Sami Williams smacking an RBI triple and scoring on a wild pitch.
Eichler drew a bases-loaded walk and Strecker delivered a run-scoring single in the sixth to extend OC's lead to 5-2 and the Lady Eagles tacked on another run in the seventh when Nordyke's single to center field scored
Daelyn Denny.
Nordyke, who relieved OC starter
Kaylie Upton (10-2) to start the fifth inning, ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh, as the Hilltoppers loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the inning. Hagood came in and quickly got Karolina Rodriguez to hit into a double play. Lauren Garza hit a two-run double to pull St. Edward's within 6-4, but Shelby Janda grounded out to end the game.
The save was the seventh of the season for Hagood, setting a new OC single-season record. The junior left-hander now leads NCAA Division II in that category this season.
