2 big innings lift Lubbock Christian past OC in series finale

Haley Squier had OC's lone RBI against Lubbock Christian on Saturday.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (April 8, 2017) – Not that it was a pleasant experience, but Oklahoma Christian was reminded Saturday of the potency of the offense of Lubbock Christian (Texas).

LCU batted around in two innings while beating the Lady Eagles 11-1 in six innings on Saturday at Tom Heath Field, avoiding a series sweep in the process after OC won both games on Friday.

The series win against a stout opponent puts OC (26-17, 8-4 Heartland Conference) in the thick of the race for the league title. The Lady Eagles will enter their final nine games of the softball season – all Heartland games – just one game behind co-leaders St. Mary's (Texas) and St. Edward's (Texas), with a series against both those foes yet to be played.

"I was proud of the way they competed in this series," OC coach Tom Heath said. "Anything can happen. I feel real good about where we're at right now and I feel good about our players."

Lubbock Christian (24-14, 6-6) remained in fifth place in the league standings, one game ahead of Newman (Kan.). The top five teams qualify for the conference tournament, to be played on the home field of the regular-season champion.

LCU took advantage of a key OC error to score four unearned runs in the top of the third inning against OC starter Madison Hagood (12-8), with Katera Eltsosie's two-run double the big blow for the Chaparrals.

OC answered in the bottom of the inning with its lone run, as Haley Squier's two-out single to left field brought home Kaylie Upton, but the Lady Eagles stranded two runners in scoring position against LCU starter Monique Garcia (8-6).

LCU made it 5-1 in the fourth, as Courtney Medina's sacrifice fly scored Addison Ard, who went 3-for-4 for the Chaparrals.

The Chaparrals sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth. Averi Miller hit a wind-blown grand slam over the left-field wall and Eltsosie added a two-run double to make it 11-1. When OC didn't score in the bottom of the inning, the game ended via the run rule.

"This is a game you've got to forget," Heath said. "You've just got to have a short memory. You're going to have these kinds of games now and then – hopefully not too many, usually once or twice a year. But any time you can win a series against Lubbock, or a series from here on out, we're in great shape. We can't feel real bad – we just have to get over it."
