Dallas Baptist sizzles from 3-point range in win over Eagles

OC senior John Moon rises for a layup during Thursday's loss to Dallas Baptist. Moon finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 19, 2017) – The way Dallas Baptist (Texas) shot the basketball from 3-point range in the second half on Thursday night in the Eagles' Nest, the Patriots might well have beaten the Golden State Warriors.

That's only slight hyperbole. Dallas Baptist shot a sizzling 73.3 percent (11 of 15) from behind the arc after halftime to pull away for an 83-70 win over Oklahoma Christian.

OC (6-10, 1-7 Heartland Conference) led by seven points with 14:21 left, but during the next 8½ minutes, Dallas Baptist (10-6, 5-2) made an astonishing 10 3-pointers while opening up an 18-point lead. Five different Patriots hit a 3-pointer during the 38-15 run, with Carter Brown's 3-pointer with 5:35 left giving Dallas Baptist a 74-58 lead.

OC coach Cory Cole called two timeouts during the run in what proved to be an unsuccessful effort to stop Dallas Baptist's momentum. Both Julian Miranda and Amari Bryant went 5-of-9 from 3-point range for the Patriots, who finished the game 16-of-32 from behind the arc. They entered the game shooting 35.9 percent as a team from 3-point range.

"Hats off to DBU," Cole said. "We know they're a dangerous team from the perimeter. "They did a good job of getting their shooters open in space. That's been our Achilles' heel – we don't come out and lock in defensively and execute the scout. A team like DBU … took advantage of it. It's the best game I've seen played in the Nest all season and it's pretty frustrating it was by another team."

The Eagles did have four players reach double figures in scoring. Senior center John Moon posted his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds and matched his season high with five blocked shots. Senior guard Keilan Horton, back after missing two games due to injury, scored 15 points, ending his run of 20-point outings after seven games.

Dorian Lopez and Marcus Mathieu each had 10 points for OC, but the Eagles as a team had only four assists.

OC closed the first half on a 6-0 run to take a 29-28 halftime lead and used a 12-2 run early in the second half to build a 45-38 advantage after a 3-pointer by Lopez at the 14:21 mark before Dallas Baptist – which played without three key players – went on its tear.

"We've got to buy in to being a defensive team," Cole said. "We're going to win with defense and we're also going to lose when we're not playing defense. That was the tone for tonight. We didn't lock in and get big stops when we needed to."

The win was the fourth straight for Dallas Baptist, which moved into second place in the Heartland with the win. Bryant led the Patriots with 27 points and six assists, while Miranda had 15 points and Myles Johnson added 14.

Moon's 14 points increased his career total to 1,674, moving him past Cary Manek (1,661 points from 1986-90) into 12th place on OC's all-time scoring list.

OC will return to action Saturday, hosting Lubbock Christian (Texas) at 3 p.m.

"I'm really excited to see how our guys are going to bounce back," Cole said. "There's plenty of season left. If we really want to do something, then we'll come out ready to play on Saturday."
