Box Score 2 GOODWELL, Okla. (April 14, 2016) –
Derek Jones ended a frustrating day at the plate for Oklahoma Christian with a three-run, ninth-inning homer and
Brady Baugh followed with a tiebreaking RBI single to lift the Eagles past Oklahoma Panhandle State 7-6 on Thursday at Aggie Field.
The narrow win was the second of the day for OC, which escaped with a 3-2 decision in the Heartland Conference baseball series opener thanks in good part to a two-run ground-rule double by
Robert Rosser.
OC (23-15, 12-5 Heartland) extended its season-long winning streak to seven games and remained in third place in the league standings behind St. Edward's (Texas) and Lubbock Christian (Texas), which each have four conference losses. OC and OPSU (5-34, 1-16) will play the series finale at 11 a.m. Friday. The series was moved up a day due to potential rain in the area over the weekend.
In the opener, OC scored all its runs in the third inning against Panhandle State starter Samuel Beattie (2-7).
Austin Orth led off with a double and took third on a bunt single by
Zac Cobble.
Alex Polston's single to right field scored Orth, and with one out, Rosser's ground-rule double brought home Cobble and Polston.
Panhandle State pulled within 3-1 in the fourth on Austin Beckner's RBI single and within 3-2 in the sixth on another run-scoring single by Beckner. Cody Dion reached base on an error and advanced to third base on another error with two outs, but OC starter
Brennan Walker (6-1) retired Derek Stallworth on a foul popup to escape the threat.
Walker (6-1) threw his second straight complete game, allowing no walks.
Four errors cost the Eagles in the second game, as they committed at least one miscue in each of the three innings during which the Aggies scored two runs each – the first, fifth and eighth.
OC pulled within 2-1 in the third on consecutive doubles by Jones and Rosser, but Panhandle State made it 4-1 in the fifth. Polston's two-run double in the top of the seventh pulled OC within 4-3, but another defensive mistake led to two more unearned runs for the Aggies in the eighth and OC trailed 6-3 after an RBI single by Quinn O'Neill.
Cobble and Polston drew walks to lead off the OC ninth, leading Panhandle State to bring in relief pitcher Scott Cutright to face Jones, who homered over the right-field wall to tie the game.
Rosser reached on an infield single, and one out later,
Kyle Lacy reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to second base on an error by the Aggies. Lacy took third on a wild pitch by Cutright (0-1), then scored as Baugh beat out another infield single.
Closer
Jake Moore hit Panhandle State's B.J. Henry with a pitch to start the bottom of the ninth, and Mick Hernandez pinch-ran for Henry. Hernandez took second base on a wild pitch, but OC catcher
Austin Orth then picked him off for the first out. Dehryen Noriega to right field with two outs, but Orth threw him out on an attempted steal to end the game, giving Moore his third save.
Reliever
Garett Hill (2-0) pitched three innings and didn't give up an earned run for OC.
