Baseball Drops Wind-Spoiled Opener to Greyhounds, 9-7

EDMOND, Okla. - A combined 10 errors were had in Friday's series opener against Eastern New Mexico as the Greyhounds prevailed in the windy afternoon contest, 9-7.

Relief pitchers Brandon Cardenas and Cooper Child each earned no-decisions on the mound, combining to pitch the final 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out three.

Trey Migl and Connor Sanderson each recorded two hits with an RBI, with both of Migl's base knocks going for extra bases. As a team, OC out-hit ENMU, 8-7, but were stricken with seven errors compared to three for the Greyhounds.

The windy conditions immediately made an impact, as eight total runs were scored on just three hits from both sides, with three errors aiding the early runs. A three-up, three-down top of the second from J.J. Rickert allowed OC to take the lead in the bottom of the second with a two-hit, one-error frame for two more runs for the 6-4 lead.

From there, the maroon-and-gray saw more errors than hits, six to four, as Eastern New Mexico used another four-run fourth to take an 8-6 lead. Cardenas and Child kept the Greyhound offense to just one more run the rest of the way as Oklahoma Christian needed three runs with three outs to work with come the bottom of the ninth.

After a lead-off walk from pinch-hitter Justin Spencer, an RBI-triple from Migl followed by the second walk of the inning brought the game-winning run to the plate with two outs still to work with. A pitching change from Eastern yielded the final two outs as ENMU took the two-run, game-one victory, 9-7.

Oklahoma Christian (9-22, 9-22 LSC) will return to Dobson Baseball Field for games two and three against Eastern New Mexico beginning at 2 p.m.
