Box Score 2 WICHITA FALLS, Texas (March 30, 2016) – With Oklahoma Christian needing a win to regain some momentum,
Madison Hagood delivered for the Lady Eagles.
The freshman pitcher didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and finished with a complete-game four-hitter as OC beat Midwestern State (Texas) 4-2 on Wednesday at Mustangs Park to snap an eight-game losing streak.
Midwestern State (22-18) took the second game of the nonconference softball doubleheader 8-4, but not before OC (15-20) – finishing up a season-long 10-game road stretch – had rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the game.
In the opener,
Sheridan Bond singled to lead off the game and scored on
Niki Davidson's two-out double to left-center field to put OC up 1-0.
For a long time, it looked like that might be all Hagood (10-7) needed, as the left-hander shut down the Mustangs inning after inning. The Lady Eagles gave her three more runs of support in the sixth, getting five hits in the inning against Midwestern State starter Erin Knox (8-3).
Jordan Chism,
Haley Squier and
Kelsie Finch each had an RBI single during the outburst.
The Mustangs finally broke through against Hagood with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, as Knox singled up the middle to score Haley Howerton, who had reached on an error. That pulled Midwestern State within 4-1 before lightning delayed the game.
After it resumed, Midwestern State threatened again in the seventh. Andrea Thomas doubled with one out in center field and Chelsey Wall followed with a single. Taylor Mordecai's sacrifice fly made it 4-2, but Hagood coaxed a popup out of Howerton to end the game.
Midwestern State broke a scoreless tie in the second game with a four-run third, keyed by Knox's two-run double. OC answered with a four-run fifth, with Davidson's three-run home run the key blow. The Lady Eagles could have scored more, but left the bases loaded.
OC again loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but Midwestern State reliever Peyton Helton (5-8) retired Davidson and
Haley Squier on lineouts to end the inning.
The Mustangs regained the lead at 5-4 on Taylor Bermudes' RBI single in the bottom of the fifth and extended it to 8-4 in the sixth, with Katelyn Vinson hitting a two-run homer off OC reliever
Madison Nordyke (1-9).
Taking a weekend off from Heartland Conference play, OC will host nonconference foe Eastern New Mexico for a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. Like Midwestern State, Eastern New Mexico is a member of the Lone Star Conference.
