Box Score 2 KINGSVILLE, Texas (March 14, 2016) – A third Texas A&M-Kingsville rally proved to be too much for Oklahoma Christian on Monday night.
The Javelinas scored three runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to edge OC 9-8 in the second game of a nonconference softball doubleheader at Hubert Field. TAMUK won the first game 7-1, snapping the Lady Eagles' seven-game winning streak.
OC (14-13) took the lead three times in extra innings in the second game, but each time, TAMUK (10-15) had the answer. Twice, the Lady Eagles led by two runs.
Kayla Eichler's two-run triple put OC up 6-4 in the top of the ninth, but two OC errors in the bottom of the inning allowed the Javelinas to pull even.
After a scoreless 10th inning, the Lady Eagles went ahead 8-6 in the top of the 11th, as Eichler's sacrifice fly scored
Avery Walker and
Haley Squier followed with a run-scoring single.
TAMUK pulled off a successful double steal in the bottom of the 11th, with Lindsey Angelico swiping home to pull the Javelinas within 8-7. Lauren Oatman scored on a wild pitch by OC reliever
Madison Hagood (9-5) to tie the game. With two outs, Roxy Chapa singled and eventually scored the game-winning run on a fielding error by the Lady Eagles.
Eichler finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Squier and
Alexus Vanlandingham also had two hits each for OC. Angelico went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a triple and scored four runs for TAMUK.
TAMUK reliever Carlie Clark (4-4) struck out nine batters in 3 2/3 innings to pick up the pitching win.
In the first game, the Javelinas scored four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to pull away. Alexei Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with four RBIs for TAMUK – with a two-run single in both the fourth and fifth – while Karri Smith (3-4) went the distance in the circle for the Javelinas, limiting OC to five hits.
Hagood took the pitching loss for the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Eagles will spend the rest of the week in south Texas, prepping for a big Heartland Conference series on Friday and Saturday against league power St. Mary's (Texas) in San Antonio. OC and St. Mary's share the conference lead with 9-0 records.
