Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 11, 2016) – The 3-point shots fell in quick successful for Newman (Kan.) during a critical second-half stretch and proved enough to lift the Jets to a 76-58 win over Oklahoma Christian on Thursday night in the Eagles' Nest.
Coming off his record-setting 50-point, 20-of-20 shooting outing five days earlier against Oklahoma Panhandle State, OC junior center
John Moon posted another outstanding stat line, scoring 27 points on 12-of-19 shooting and adding nine rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot. He extended his streak of consecutive made field-goal attempts to 21 before missing a shot about 100 seconds into the game.
But Moon was the Eagles' only player to score in double figures. OC (6-17, 3-12 Heartland Conference) fell two games behind St. Mary's (Texas) in the race for what figures to be the final berth into the league's postseason tournament. St. Mary's upset St. Edward's (Texas) 84-77 on Thursday. Both St. Mary's and OC have five games remaining.
OC started off reasonably well against Newman (14-9, 7-8) and led the Jets 19-17 after a layup by freshman
Daniel Eibel with 10:13 left in the first half. Newman's Jalen Love answered with a 3-pointer to give his team the lead for good, but the Eagles were within striking distance at halftime, trailing 40-33.
A 6-0 spurt that included two baskets by Moon pulled OC within 42-39 with 16:40 left. OC trailed 44-41 with 15:24 left before the Jets reeled off a 15-2 run, capped by consecutive 3-pointers by Jarvis Williams, Williams again and Daniel Nwosu.
Newman, which went 12-of-28 from 3-point range (42.9 percent), eventually hit five 3-pointers in five minutes to blow open the game. OC went just 2-of-15 (13.3 percent) from behind the arc.
Taylor Schieber led five Jets in double figures in scoring with 13 points. Williams and James Pegues had 11 points each and Love and Nwosu had 10 each. Kevin Bryant grabbed 10 rebounds for Newman.
Moon moved past Reggie Richardson (1990-1992) into 26
th place on OC's career scoring list with 1,278 points.
OC will host league-leading Dallas Baptist (Texas) on Monday at 7 p.m.
