Clift matches career high, but OC drops heartbreaker against Texas Woman’s

Addy Clift matched her 4-day-old career scoring high with 27 points against Texas Woman's.
Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 26, 2016) – For the second straight game, Oklahoma Christian guard Addy Clift proved almost unstoppable, but it wasn't quite enough for the Lady Eagles against Texas Woman's on Saturday afternoon.

Clift, a sophomore from Kiowa, matched her career high (set on Tuesday at Arkansas Tech) with 27 points, but Kara Mitchell's layup with 6.1 seconds proved to be the difference for Texas Woman's as the Pioneers rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat OC 80-78 in the Eagles' Nest.

Texas Woman's (5-1), ranked fifth in the South Central Region, shot 60.4 percent from the field – including a sizzling 76 percent (19 of 25) in the second half – and needed every bit of that to beat OC (1-5), which shot a respectable 46.7 percent.

McKenzie Stanford missed a 22-footer at the buzzer that could have won the game for the Lady Eagles, who now have suffered three losses this basketball season against regionally ranked foes.

"We are lacking in our offensive and defensive execution," OC coach Stephanie Findley said. "Our communication on defense isn't good. We've got to get better. We've got to get better in communicating. We've got a little while to figure it out before we get into conference play. That's what I'm hoping, is that we can get everything all together."

It was even more frustrating for Findley because her team seemingly had the game in control, leading 62-49 with 1:10 left in the third quarter following a 3-pointer by Clift, who went 10-of-16 from the field, including 7-of-7 from 2-point range.

But OC defenders continually left the Pioneers' best 3-point shooters open and Texas Woman's took advantage, hitting three 3-pointers in a two-minute span early in the fourth quarter. The last of those, by Emily Spector, pulled the Pioneers within 69-67. Spector made two free throws with 4:39 left to put the Pioneers up 70-69, their first lead since the second quarter.

"Untimely turnovers and leaving 3-point shooters open has been the story of our season so far," Findley said.

Clift swished another 3-pointer with 4:24 left to give the lead back to OC, but a jumper by Cienna Rodrigez and a 3-pointer by Andrea Mapua, the latter with 3:08 left, gave Texas Woman's the lead for good at 75-72. The Pioneers stretched the lead to 77-72 on a bucket by Alexis Nezianya with 2:29 left.

Clift's driving layup with 31.6 seconds left pulled OC within 77-76, and after Nezianya made 1-of-2 free throws with 29.9 seconds left, Clift hit a pair of free throws with 29.5 seconds left to tie the game.

"Addy has played well the last two games," Findley said. "She is knocking down shots. Nothing fazes her."

Texas Woman's called timeout and advanced the ball to midcourt. Mitchell – who led the Pioneers with 17 points and five assists – took the inbounds pass, ran the clock down, then drove through the OC defense for the go-ahead layup.

After Mitchell's basket, OC was out of timeouts and thus had to hurry upcourt. The ball ended up in Stanford's hands but her shot was long.

Sarah Parker added 16 points and five steals for OC, while freshman Megan Shelton recorded career highs with 11 points and 20 minutes of playing time. Audrey Hayes had 10 points and four steals for the Lady Eagles.

Spector and Mapua scored 14 points each, combining to go 6-of-11 from 3-point range. Nezianya also scored 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

OC will return to action on Monday, hosting NAIA opponent USAO at 7 p.m.
