Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Nov. 19, 2016) – Before this season,
Keilan Horton hadn't played a competitive basketball game in two years, since his junior-college days at Santa Monica (Calif.). But with every game for Oklahoma Christian, he's shaking off the rust more and more and producing.
The senior guard led five Eagles in double figures with 15 points as OC cruised to its first win of the young campaign, routing Barclay (Kan.) 101-65 on Saturday afternoon in the Eagles' Nest.
OC (1-2) gave new coach
Cory Cole his first official win while never trailing against Barclay (1-5), which used the contest as an exhibition game on its schedule. Barclay is a National Christian College Athletic Association Division II member.
"It's just good to get that monkey off your back," Cole said. "Especially at home, it means a lot. I had family in the building, which is special. It's just good that now we can focus and get ready for USAO, which is the next game."
Horton went 3-of-5 from 3-point range to lead the Eagles, providing a solid outside counterbalance to the usual inside exploits of OC senior center
John Moon, who played only 20 minutes but still had 14 points, seven rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals. Moon went 6-of-8 from the field, with five of those baskets coming on dunks over the outmatched Bears.
"I really liked Horton," Cole said. "It was his first start and he hadn't played in two years. There were a little bit of pregame jitters, but he was nails, just coming out and playing tough. I really liked
Dorian Lopez. He's been one of our most consistent guys, just doing the little things and starting to get better defensively, and then John's starting to play so much better on the defensive end.
"We're still figuring things out with how to use him more offensively, but to see him get down and guard 6-foot-3 guys as a 7-footer … he did a lot of little things. That's what you need, to have your best guy doing the little things like everyone else."
As a team, OC shot a strong 50.7 percent (38 of 75) while limiting Barclay to 33.9 percent (19 of 56) from the field, including 13.3 percent (2 of 15). OC also outrebounded the Bears 48-36.
Also scoring in double figures for OC were freshman
Dorian Lopez with 13 points, junior
Elijah Strickland (10) and sophomore
Jordan Box (10). Junior
Tripp Fuller just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Thirteen of the 14 OC players who suited up scored – all but, rather unusually, starting point guard
Marcus Mathieu. Mathieu did have four assists and four rebounds in 21 minutes.
"Our depth is something we've prided ourselves on since day one," Cole said. "You want guys in a game like this to get a groove and get a feel and (Mathieu) was a big part of that. It's good to see the depth kind of play out.
"We learned that we have a deep team and we can play multiple ways, that we can play up-tempo. That's something that I've got to be as a coach, is more willing to set that tempo, because we've got guys who can play that way. We're going to do that."
OC steadily built its advantage while building a 50-26 halftime lead. Barclay did reel off an 11-4 run in the second half to pull within 67-41 with 11:38 left, but Moon had two dunks in an 8-0 spurt by the Eagles that ended all doubt.
The only question at that point was whether or not the Eagles would hit triple figures on the scoreboard, and they did so on a put-back basket by
Ivor Baric with 37 seconds left.
Quinton Walker led the Bears with 19 points while Jay Milton added 14.
OC will host familiar foe USAO on Monday at 7 p.m. The Eagles and Drovers were longtime rivals in the Sooner Athletic Conference during OC's NAIA era. Former OC standout Kendre Talley is in his first season as an assistant coach at USAO.
