Box Score 2 MASON, Ohio (May 20, 2015) – Entering the National Christian College Athletic Association World Series, Oklahoma Christian baseball coach
Lonny Cobble expressed confidence in the quality and depth of the Eagles' pitching staff.
OC's pitchers showed why on Wednesday.
Kelby Reneau and
Garett Hill combined on a gem in a 2-1, 10-inning win over Bethesda (Calif.) at Prasco Park, then
Brennan Walker,
Dylon Sturges and
Eddie Broll all but shut down Oakland City (Ind.) as the Eagles prevailed 3-1 at adjacent Legacy Field.
Third-seeded OC (34-20) extended its winning streak to seven games and, more importantly, has won two games at the NCCAA World Series for the first time in its three appearances in the event. The top two finishers in each of two five-team pools qualify for the semifinals, meaning the Eagles could clinch a spot Thursday when they face second-seeded Lee (Tenn.).
Both games Wednesday featured down-to-the-wire finishes – OC's
Jordan Lopez delivered a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to score fellow senior
Cody Rosecrans with the winning run against sixth-seeded Bethesda, and Broll escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the ninth by picking off an Oakland City runner, then coaxing a popup from the next batter.
"We had outstanding pitching from all five guys we threw today," Cobble said. "Reneau and Hill were on point today. Walker, Sturges and Broll all three had great command. It was a big-time performance by all of them."
In the opener, the pitching for both OC and Bethesda (28-27) was outstanding. Reneau went 7 1/3 innings, giving up six hits and one unearned run while walking none and striking out five, and Hill (5-1) needed only 10 pitches to complete 2 2/3 innings of relief and pick up the win.
Meanwhile, Bethesda sidearmer Braxton Diaz (7-4) went the distance for the Flames, walking two but not recording a strikeout.
OC took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Lopez drew a leadoff walk, went to second base on a sacrifice by
Derek Jones and took third on a groundout by
Kyle Lacy. McKenzie then singled to center field, scoring Lopez.
Jackson Matthews followed with a double, putting runners on second and third.
Caden Cleveland then hit a line drive that appeared destined to extend OC's lead, but Bethesda right fielder Christopher Jacobs chased it down to end the inning.
With one out in the sixth, Jacobs reached on an infield single and took second on a throwing error by McKenzie. After Reneau fanned Nathan Muñoz, Esau Madriga doubled to left-center field to bring home Jacobs and tie the game.
Bethesda pinch-hitter Justin Powell doubled to right-center field with one out in the eighth and Hill entered the game in relief of Reneau. On Hill's first pitch, Jacobs hit a line drive that McKenzie snagged, then threw to second baseman
Zac Cobble to complete the double play.
McKenzie, Cobble and first baseman
Kolton Brown turned another inning-ending double play in the ninth inning. McKenzie doubled with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but was left stranded. He had three of OC's seven hits.
In the 10th, Rosecrans smashed a one-out double to right field that eluded Jacobs.
Zac Cobble then hit a line drive that second baseman Christopher Carpio jumped to catch, but Carpio landed on his rear end and his throw to second base to try and double off Rosecrans was wide of the bag.
Lopez followed with his game-winning single up the middle.
Walker (5-1) and Oakland City left-hander Trent Benningfield (2-5) staged another pitchers' duel in the Eagles' second game, with Walker giving up seven hits in seven innings and Benningfield surrendering only six hits while going the distance.
Tenth-seeded Oakland City (17-24) threatened in the second, as Mitch Lampert doubled and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Deutsch, but Walker retired the next two batters on short fly balls, stranding Lampert.
After leaving two runners on base in each of the first two innings, OC broke through against the Oaks in the sixth. Jones reached on an infield single and took second when second baseman Jamie Valvano's throw to first base instead sailed out of play. Lacy was hit by pitch and both runners were sacrificed up a base by McKenzie.
A walk to Matthews loaded the bases and
Austin Orth delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jones.
The Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 in the seventh. A walk to
Brady Baugh, a single by
Zac Cobble and an error that allowed Lopez to reach first loaded the bases with one out, and Lacy hit a two-out single into right field to score Cobble and Lopez.
Oakland City's run came in the bottom of the seventh. Cody Thornton reached on an infield single, went to second on a walk to Ethan Collins and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Valvano.
Sturges pitched a perfect eighth inning before running into trouble in the ninth, as the Oaks loaded the bases with one out, thanks to two walks and infield single. Broll came in and before throwing a pitch, picked pinch-runner Cordell Snyder off second base for the second out.
Broll then got Valvano to pop up to McKenzie, OC's shortstop. It was Broll's second career save with OC and his first this season.
