Arkansas-Fort Smith takes pair from Eagles, clinches 4th in Heartland

Cody Rosecrans hit a solo home run for the Eagles in their second game Friday against Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT SMITH, Ark. (May 1, 2015) – Oklahoma Christian's hopes of a top-four finish in the Heartland Conference regular-season baseball standings ended Friday at Arkansas-Fort Smith.

UAFS jumped on OC ace Dillon Endecott late in a 4-1 win, then did the same early to the Eagles' No. 2 starter, Kelby Reneau, while completing the doubleheader sweep with a 15-6 win at Crowder Field.

OC (27-20, 13-13 Heartland) needed a three-game series sweep of UAFS (27-18, 15-9) to move into fourth place in the conference. Instead, the Lions will finish fourth, with OC taking fifth in the rugged NCAA Division II league.

Derek Jones hit a solo home run off UAFS starter Jordan Cordray (4-3) in the top of the first to put the Eagles ahead, but Tyler Lein led off the Lions' half of the inning with a home run of his own off Endecott (6-4).

The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, as Josh Vanderpool reached on an infield single with one out and eventually scored on a groundout by Brennan Rogers.

OC picked up back-to-back doubles from Kyle Lacy and Jones in the sixth, but Lacy was unable to score on Jones' hit, holding at third base, and was thrown out at home on the next play as Ben McKenzie reached on a fielder's choice grounder. The Eagles stranded two baserunners in the inning.

Vanderpool hit a two-run homer in the sixth to extend the Lions' lead to 4-1. Cordray then finished off his complete-game three-hitter. Endecott also went the distance, allowing six hits and striking out five batters.

In the second game, the Lions tagged Reneau (3-7) for six runs on six hits in the first inning and the Eagles never quite recovered. UAFS eventually led 9-1 before OC rallied within 10-6 thanks to two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Cody Rosecrans' solo home run highlighted the fifth for the Eagles, while Jones' bases-loaded double drove in all three sixth-inning runs.

UAFS answered with a run in the sixth and five more in the seventh to seal the win.

Jones went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for OC while Zac Cobble also had three hits.

Wayde Roth (8-2) pitched an inning of relief for the Lions to pick up the win, while Hayden Harvey threw the final 3 2/3 innings to earn his first save.

The teams will complete their series on Saturday at noon in the scheduled regular-season finale, although OC might add a home game next week as the Eagles prepare for the upcoming National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region tournament.
