Lady Eagles clinch 4th place in Heartland with split at Newman

OC freshman Madison Nordyke threw a complete game and doubled twice to lead the Lady Eagles past Newman in the second game of their doubleheader Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA, Kan. (April 25, 2015) – Madison Nordyke threw a complete game and doubled twice to lead Oklahoma Christian to a 5-1 win over Newman (Kan.) at the NU Softball Field on Saturday afternoon, giving the Lady Eagles a split of a Heartland Conference doubleheader.

Newman won the first game 1-0, overcoming an outstanding pitching effort by OC senior Taylor Mosher, who allowed only two hits while going the distance.

The split clinched fourth place in the regular-season conference standings for OC (25-18, 13-10 Heartland). The Lady Eagles lead fifth-place St. Edward's (Texas) – which lost 4-2 at St. Mary's (Texas) on Saturday – by a full game with only one regular-season game remaining, at Newman on Sunday afternoon. St. Edward's (25-20, 12-11) is done with the regular season.

For its part, Newman (16-37, 7-15) clinched the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Heartland postseason tournament, for which OC is ineligible due to its status as a NCAA Division II provisional member.

In the second game, Monique Elliott and Niki Davidson delivered RBI doubles for OC during the fifth inning, staking the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 lead against Newman starter Katie Ingles (8-15).

Nordyke doubled and scored on a single by Kelsie Finch in the sixth, making it 3-0, but Newman's Courtney Sartin hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning, pulling the Jets within 3-1. The Jets committed three errors in the top of the seventh and OC took advantage, with Nordyke's second double keying a two-run inning.

Nordyke (6-4) scattered six hits and struck out five batters.

In the opener, Mosher (4-4) had a no-hitter going until the fifth inning, when Madison Bish's double down the left-field line scored Kassidy Furr, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Newman's only other hit came in the sixth, a single by Sartin.

OC had eight hits but stranded nine baserunners against Newman pitcher Jensen Cromer (7-13).
