Box Score 2 LUBBOCK, Texas (April 25, 2015) – As the baseball season nears its end, Oklahoma Christian pitcher
Dillon Endecott is gaining steam.
Endecott on Saturday recorded his third win in as many starts, throwing a complete-game five-hitter as OC beat Lubbock Christian (Texas) 7-2 at Hays Field in the first game of a Heartland Conference doubleheader.
Lubbock Christian rebounded to win the second game 18-10, setting up a series-deciding game Sunday at 1 p.m. OC (26-17, 12-11) last won a season series from Lubbock Christian (22-22, 9-11) in 2010, when the Eagles took two of three games in Lubbock when both squads competed in the NAIA's Sooner Athletic Conference.
The Eagles' win in the opener on Saturday was only their fifth at Hays Field since OC began playing Lubbock Christian in 1972. Endecott (6-3), the reigning Heartland pitcher of the week, again was masterful. The right-hander from McLoud allowed only one run in the second and a meaningless run in the seventh and struck out seven batters while recording his third complete game of the season.
Derek Jones led OC's hitting attack, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and three RBIs. The triple came during a two-run first and scored
Zac Cobble, who walked to lead off against Lubbock Christian starter Brig Gerlich (5-7).
Ben McKenzie followed Jones' triple with a run-scoring double down the left-field line.
In the second,
Cody Rosecrans doubled to center field (one of two doubles for the senior from Edmond) and scored on a single to left by Cobble. McKenzie later singled home
Kyle Lacy to make it 4-0. The Chaparrals pulled within 4-1 in the bottom of the second, but Jones clubbed a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 6-1. Cobble, who went 3-for-3, had singled ahead of Jones' shot.
Three unearned runs in the second inning of the second game put the Chaparrals ahead against OC starter
Kelby Reneau (3-6) and they added three more in the third to take a 6-1 lead.
The Eagles never went away, though, scoring in each of their final four at-bats to keep the result in doubt. Three times OC pulled within two runs before Lubbock Christian sealed the win with a seven-run eighth inning.
Lacy went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run for OC while Cobble and
Austin Orth each added a pair of RBIs. Jesse Pintado went 4-for-6 for the Chaparrals, with Hunter McFall and Josh Powe each homering.
Lubbock Christian starter Guillaume Blanchette (5-5) pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out six batters while picking up the win.
