Box Score 2 CLAREMORE, Okla. (April 2, 2015) – For the second time in as many days, Oklahoma Christian put together one of its best offensive innings of the softball season, and it proved vital to the Lady Eagles securing a split of a doubleheader at Rogers State on Thursday afternoon.
The nine-run fourth-inning outburst for OC paved the way for a 14-7 win over the Hillcats at the Diamond Sports Complex, after Rogers State had won the opener 7-4. The teams will decide the winner of the three-game Heartland Conference series on Friday at noon.
OC (18-13, 7-7 Heartland) recorded a season-best 11-run inning on Thursday in a nonconference home game against Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.). The Lady Eagles almost matched it on Friday at Rogers State (9-19, 5-11), sending 15 batters to the plate against three pitchers and turning a 4-2 deficit into an 11-4 lead.
Courtney Starr's two-run double and two-run singles by
Kendra Pierce and
Madison Nordyke were the primary blows in OC's big inning.
A two-run single by
Sheridan Bond keyed a three-run seventh inning for OC and those insurance runs proved helpful after Rogers State's Carley Conley hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning.
Nordyke went 4-for-5 and Pierce went 3-for-4 at the plate for OC, moving her league-leading batting average to .524. Pierce entered the week fifth in NCAA Division II in that category.
Haley Squier (3-1) threw four innings of relief to record the pitching win for the Lady Eagles, while Rogers State reliever Bailee Kaderka (4-11) took the loss.
In the first game, Cailin Simpson hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and give the Hillcats the win. Whitney Hamilton went 3-for-3 with four RBIs for Rogers State, which snapped what had been an eight-game winning streak for OC.
OC starter
Shea Coats (7-7) recorded her 12th complete game of the season, striking out seven batters and allowing six hits. Rogers State's Rachel Jones (4-3) was the beneficiary of Simpson's heroics and picked up the win after throwing 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief.
