Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY (March 17, 2015) – Even with the nifty green accents to their uniforms, there was no luck for Oklahoma Christian's softball players on St. Patrick's Day.
The Lady Eagles dropped a pair of games to in-state rival Cameron in decidedly different fashions at
Tom Heath Field – losing a 1-0 pitchers' duel before falling 19-9 in an offensive slugfest.
In the opener, Cameron pitcher Kelsey Watson (9-1) and OC ace
Shea Coats each threw a four-hitter. Unfortunately for Coats, two of the Aggies' hits came in the third inning and were preceded by a walk. Tara Martini's double to left field scored Misty Dooley with what proved to be the game's only run.
Coats retired 15 of Cameron's next 16 batters and finished the game with 12 strikeouts. But OC (9-12) stranded eight baserunners and didn't advance anyone past second base against Watson, who had eight strikeouts.
Cameron (21-2) jumped ahead 3-0 in the second game, but the Lady Eagles broke out of their offensive doldrums with a five-run third inning, keyed by a two-run triple by
Kendra Pierce. Three of OC's runs in the inning came with two outs, another positive sign.
OC scored three more runs with two outs in the fourth, with
Jordan Chism,
Sheridan Bond and
Haley Squier delivering consecutive RBI singles to put the Lady Eagles up 8-3.
That's where the good news ended for OC, as Cameron poured it on offensively the rest of the way, scoring 16 straight runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Three Aggies – Sonora Zukerman, Chelsea DeLong and Tara Martini – all homered during that stretch.
Coats (5-6), who entered in relief in the fifth inning, took the pitching loss for OC, while Zukerman (7-1) pitched the final three innings for Cameron, allowing one run.
The Lady Eagles will continue their 14-game homestand on Friday, when they host Texas-Permian Basin for the first two games of a three-game Heartland Conference series.
