Coats, Mosher shine in circle, Pierce homers as Lady Eagles win twice in Texas

OC's Kendra Pierce hit a two-run homer in the Lady Eagles' win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 20, 2015) – A 10-day layoff apparently didn't dull the competitiveness of Oklahoma Christian's softball team, as evidenced by the Lady Eagles' performance Thursday on the first day of the St. Mary's Tournament.

Shea Coats threw a three-hit shutout as OC beat traditional South Central Region power Texas Woman's 3-0, then Taylor Mosher and Coats combined on another shutout as the Lady Eagles downed Texas A&M-Commerce 4-0.

OC (4-0) hadn't played since Feb. 10, when the Lady Eagles swept Mid-America Christian, but jumped out to a quick lead against Texas Woman's (5-8). Monique Elliott drew a leadoff walk in the first inning and eventually scored to make it 1-0, and in the second, Haley Squier reached on an error, moved to third on a double by Sheridan Bond and scored on a single by Elliott off Texas Woman's starter Bailee Wortham.

The Lady Eagles went up 3-0 in the fifth after an RBI single by Squier.

Meanwhile, Coats (3-0) worked out of trouble most of the day, stranding 10 baserunners. The Pioneers left two runners on base in each of the first three innings and left the bases loaded in the sixth against Coats. The sophomore right-hander struck out six batters and walked three.

Mosher (1-0) picked up against Texas A&M-Commerce (10-4) where Coats had left off, as the Lions stranded five baserunners in the first two innings but were unable to break through against the senior right-hander.

OC took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, when Courtney Starr singled ahead of a home run over the left-field wall by Kendra Pierce off TAMUC starter Aundria Romero (5-1). The Lady Eagles picked up two more runs in the fourth after Kelsie Finch doubled and Madison Nordyke singled and later came around.

Mosher didn't allow a run through 5 1/3 innings. Coats came on in relief in the sixth inning after the Lions put two runners on with one out and escaped the jam with a popup and a strikeout.

The Lions picked up two more hits in the seventh but Coats again held them at bay to record her first save of the season and the seventh of her career, setting a new OC record. She had previously shared the career saves mark with Ashley Paxton, set in 2011-12.

Texas A&M-Commerce had entered the game having already swept OC's Heartland Conference rivals St. Edward's (Texas) and Texas A&M International and beaten No. 4-ranked Southeastern Oklahoma State, which finished third in Division II last season.

OC will play Tarleton State (Texas) and Texas Woman's on Saturday before finishing tournament play on Sunday against Central Oklahoma.
