Box Score 2 GOODWELL, Okla. (May 2, 2014) – Oklahoma Christian took care of business on Friday and received some help from other quarters of the Heartland Conference, helping the Eagles move up in the league standings.
Blake Stringer and
Jordan Lopez each had five hits, including a home run, and
Dillon Endecott extended his school record with his 11th save of the season as OC swept last-place Oklahoma Panhandle State 14-3 and 6-3 in a doubleheader at the Aggie Baseball Field.
OC (31-15, 18-11 Heartland) moved past St. Mary's (Texas) into third place in league play, as the Rattlers (31-18, 17-12) were swept by Texas A&M International. Both teams have one game remaining, on Saturday.
Because Newman (Kan.) split a doubleheader Friday with Arkansas-Fort Smith, OC – which won two of three games at St. Mary's last week but remained behind the Rattlers in the South Central Region rankings – now is guaranteed to finish no lower than a tie for third during the regular-season. OC is ineligible for the Heartland's postseason tournament, with the top four eligible league teams qualifying.
OC, ranked seventh in the region, also clinched only the seventh 30-win season in the program's history and the first since then-coach Johnny Inman guided the Eagles to a 35-22 mark in 1998. OC's single-season record for wins is 36, set in 1994 and matched in 1996.
In the opener on Friday, Stringer's RBI double down the left-field line keyed a two-run first inning against Panhandle State starter Walker Rainwater (2-5). By the time the game ended, the Eagles had pounded three Panhandle State pitchers for 16 hits. Stringer finished 3-for-5 with six RBIs.
OC added three runs in the third, two in the fourth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh, three of those on Stringer's homer. Lopez went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while
A.J. Florence also homered for the Eagles and had two hits, along with
Caleb Price,
Robert Rosser and
Cory Eastwood.
On the mound,
Brandon Pierce (9-3) allowed eight hits and three runs in six innings to earn the win for the Eagles.
The second game proved to be much tighter. The teams were locked in a 1-1 duel until OC broke through for four runs in the top of the seventh against the Aggies' starter, Spencer Long (2-9). Lopez delivered the big blow in the inning, a two-run single to left field that scored
Zac Cobble and Eastwood.
The Aggies (12-36, 2-26) answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning against reliever
Dylon Sturges, but
Eddie Broll pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Endecott slammed the door shut with a scoreless ninth. OC starter
Luke Sandoval (3-2) allowed one run and two hits in six innings to record the win.
