7th-inning rally falls just short as Lady Eagles lose 3-2 at Lubbock Christian

Box Score

LUBBOCK, Texas (March 14, 2014) – Martha Thomas hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning, but Oklahoma Christian's late rally came up one run short and the Lady Eagles lost 3-2 to Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Friday afternoon at PlainsCapital Park.

LCU (26-3, 9-3 Heartland Conference) swept the three-game league series from OC (13-11, 2-4), although the Lady Eagles were competitive in each contest against the longtime small-college power that, like OC, is transitioning from the NAIA into NCAA Division II.

Lubbock Christian pitcher Katera Eltsosie (13-2) had a perfect game going until there were two outs in the seventh inning. Courtney Starr's single up the middle gave the Lady Eagles life, however, and Thomas followed with her home run over the left-field fence to slice LCU's lead to 3-2.

But Eltsosie recovered to retire Niki Davidson on a fly ball to center field, ending the game.

The Lady Chaparrals scored all of their runs in the third inning against OC freshman pitcher Haley Squier (1-4), taking advantage of two errors by OC. Mallory Koschancy had a RBI single for LCU and later scored on a two-run homer by Ashton Bell.

Squier otherwise was superb, as she allowed only five hits and no walks while going the distance.

OC will return to action on Tuesday, hosting Oklahoma Wesleyan in a doubleheader at Tom Heath Field at Lawson Plaza.
