Eagles come close, but can’t dig out of big hole in loss to Cameron

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 6, 2014) – Seemingly before folks could get settled into their seats in the Eagles' Nest on Saturday afternoon, Cameron sprinted to a 16-point lead, courtesy of layup after layup.

Oklahoma Christian spent the rest of the basketball game trying to extricate itself from that predicament. The Eagles came close, rallying within two points, but eventually fell 68-61 in their nonconference finale.

OC coach Dan Hays placed the blame on what he called "touchdown turnovers." The Eagles had 17 turnovers, many of which came at inopportune times after OC had cut Cameron's lead to a manageable margin. Those turnovers led to 22 points for Cameron (4-3).

"Those are turnovers that lead to baskets," Hays said. "We've got to correct that. But I'm real pleased with the way we battled. All of our freshmen made great contributions today. … We've just got to get some people off of John (Moon) in the low post. Eric (Randall) did some good things. I've got to adjust some things a little bit. I know what to do. It's just going to take us a little bit of time."

Four players scored in double figures for OC (2-4), led Moon, a 7-foot center who had 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. But as in previous games, the Eagles again had trouble getting Moon the ball, with the Cameron defense making him their focus.

OC's other primary inside player, Randall, scored 12 points to go with seven rebounds, hitting 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Elijah Strickland went 2-of-4 from behind the arc and scored 10 points. But apart from those two, the rest of the Eagles went 3-of-13 from 3-point range.

The Eagles' defense after Cameron's initial run was mostly outstanding, as they held the Aggies – who entered the game shooting 49.5 percent from 3-point range – to a 3-of-19 performance from long distance (15.8 percent). Cameron's primary weapons proved to be forward Deondre Ray (20 points on 8-of-13 shooting) and guard Desmond Henry (13 points, seven assists, three steals).

"We did some good things defensively," Hays said. "We've been working on our man defense, which we hadn't been playing much. We did a better job today."

A jumper by Jordan Box, who scored 11 points for OC, tied the game at 4-4 at the 16:46 mark of the first half. That was the Eagles' last field goal for almost seven minutes, allowing Cameron to go on a 17-1 run. Ray's jumper at the 10:26 mark made it 21-5.

An 8-0 run by OC near the end of the half pulled the Eagles within 32-25 by halftime. They kept chipping away, pulling within five points, then four before a 9-0 spurt by the Aggies rebuild the margin to 13 at 46-33 with 11:30 left.

Strickland hit both his 3-pointers and Cameron Peters had another during a 15-4 run by the Eagles that cut Cameron's lead to 50-48 with 6:53 left. Moments later, after a Cameron turnover, Box missed a 3-point attempt, and Ray scored on a fast-break layup at the other end for the Aggies. D.J. Jackson followed with a steal and layup for Cameron and the Eagles never had another chance to take the lead.

OC will have a 10-day break before playing its Heartland Conference opener at home on Dec. 16 against St. Edward's (Texas), followed by a league contest two days later against Texas-Permian Basin.
