St. Mary’s sweeps Lady Eagles in softball doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (April 12, 2013) – Oklahoma Christian managed only four hits in each game as St. Mary's (Texas) swept a Heartland Conference softball doubleheader from the Lady Eagles on Friday at Roadrunner Field.

St. Mary's took the first game 8-1, then scored a run in its final at-bat to edge OC 5-4 in the second game. The Rattlers were led by Taylor Vidrine, who went 4-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs scored in the doubleheader.

In the first game, St. Mary's (33-12) jumped on OC starter Lindsy Moore early. Vidrine hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Rattlers tacked on four more runs in the third on RBI singles by Jared Gonzalez, Alex Rodriguez, Sarah Perez and Nicole Sardelich off Moore (6-9).

OC (18-19) scored its only run in the fourth, as Kendra Pierce doubled and Martha Thomas drove her home with a single up the middle. St. Mary's added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

Emily Brittain (19-4) went the distance in the pitching circle for the Rattlers.

The Lady Eagles jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning in the second game, thanks to a two-run home run by Martha Thomas. But St. Mary's answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and tied the game at 2-2 in the second.

St. Mary's went ahead 4-2 in the fourth against OC starter Taylor Mosher. OC pulled even at 4-4 in the fifth, however, thanks to a two-out rally. Sarah Peoples reached on an infield single and Michelle Miller was hit by a pitch before Pierce doubled to center field, scoring both of them.

But in the sixth, the Rattlers scored the decisive run against reliever Krystal Rodriguez (5-2). Vidrine doubled to left-center field with one out and scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Alex Rodriguez.

St. Mary's starter Crystal Keller (6-1) retired the Lady Eagles in order in the seventh to seal the win for the Rattlers.

OC and St. Mary's will play the final game of the series on Saturday at noon. The series had been scheduled to be hosted by OC, but rain earlier this week resulted in the series being played in San Antonio.
