OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 29, 2009) – No. 15 Oklahoma Christian University breezed past St. Gregory's University (Okla.) 72-52 on Thursday night for its sixth-straight victory.
The win sets up Oklahoma Christian's huge road game at No. 5 Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday night in Shawnee. The game has been dubbed the NAIA National Game of the Week by the national office and tip time is set for 8 p.m. at OBU's Noble Complex.
The Eagles are now 16-4 on the year and 9-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference action. The Cavaliers sunk to 2-16 and 1-11.
Jason Taylor had his ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds in Thursday's win. The Edmond, Okla., forward came in ranked third in the NAIA at 23.2 points per game, and first the SAC with 8.6 rebounds per contest.
Kyle Tefft – who came in leading the NAIA with 3.47 steals per game – recorded six takeaways to go with six rebounds, five assists and one point. David Jackson dropped 17 points on 5-of-10 three-point shooting, while Jeff Crocker added 10 points and two assists.
OC didn't lead until the 12:27 mark of the first half after SGU jumped out to an 8-3 cushion in the opening five minutes. The Eagles finally went on top when Jackson picked up a Tefft deflected pass and made it 13-11 with a layup.
OC scored the game's next 13 points and never looked back. The Eagles went up by double digits (22-11) when Izea Lovejoy scored off the window with 9:18 to play.
Taylor nearly had his double-double in the first half alone with eight points and nine rebounds at the break. Jackson finished with 11 first-half points as the Eagles held the Cavaliers to just 27-percent shooting (7-26).
OC started the second half on a 12-2 run, and the lead swelled to 20 points (41-21) when Taylor made a pair of foul shots at the 17:45 mark.
It was a 25-point lead (57-32) when Crocker swished a triple at the 9:47 point before the Eagles settled on the 20-point win. OC played its reserves almost exclusively in the closing 10 minutes of the half, giving the Eagles a fresh lineup for Saturday's showdown.
Ten Eagles scored in the win. Lionel Saban came off the bench for nine points, while Jon Jonsson had six, Chad Endres added five and Sam Stephens had four.
SGU's Jade Carter led all scorers with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Kyle Lulko also had double digits with 13 points.
