OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 21, 2009) – Oklahoma Christian University won its fourth-straight game with a 60-49 victory over rival Southern Nazarene University (Okla.) inside the Eagles' Nest on Saturday night.
The win takes Oklahoma Christian to 13-7 in Sooner Athletic Conference play and 20-8 overall. It's the Eagles' first 20-win season since the 2005-06 squad went 22-11.
Oklahoma Christian senior guard Kyle Tefft entered the school record books in the win by setting a new mark for steals in a season with 90. The Enid, Okla., product had four takeaways on Saturday to eclipse the previous mark of 86 by Terrance Gaines from 1988-89. Tefft finished the game with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Eagles held the Crimson Storm (17-10, 10-9) to their lowest point total of the year. The 49 SNU points fell over 20 points shy of the team's season average of 69.1. The total is also the third-lowest total by a SNU team in the Dan Hays era at OC.
Jason Taylor recorded his 11th double-double of the season for OC with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The five-time SAC Player of the Week passed out four assists and grabbed two steals.
OC sophomore point guard Jeff Crocker scored 16 points and dished out six assists to go with two steals.
OC controlled the first part of the opening half, and the Eagles led 22-12 with 4:40 to play when Taylor scored from the right block.
But SNU scored the game's next eight points, and after consecutive threes from Tyree Scott and Vladimir Bulut, the score was 22-20 Eagles. OC pushed right back with a two from Chad Endres (1:41) and a triple from Tefft (1:03) to make it 27-20.
The Storm scored four quick points to make it 27-24, then Tefft secured a Kyle Boen three-point miss with three seconds left, took two dribbles and heaved a three-quarters court shot that found nothing but net to make it 30-22 OC at the break.
The Eagles pushed their lead into double figures thanks to a 13-2 run to start the second half. OC went up 10 points (32-22) with two Taylor foul shots at 17:19, and it was a 15-point lead (38-23) when he scored again at the 14:55 mark.
OC took its largest lead of the game at 19 points by the 4:43 mark when Crocker found Chad Endres for an easy layup in transition to make it 54-35. The Eagles cruised home from there to sweep the regular-season series from SNU.
Brandon Durham paced the Storm with 11 points, while Daniel White led the team with seven rebounds.
OC looks to extend its winning streak on Feb. 26 at Mid-America Christian (Okla.). Game time is set for 8 p.m. in southwest Oklahoma City.Â
