OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Nov. 24, 2008) – Oklahoma Christian had four players score in double figures in a 69-57 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Monday night.
The Sooner Athletic Conference opener improves the Eagles to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play. Northwestern moves to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the SAC.
The Rangers controlled the game early on after jumping out to a 9-0 lead behind threes from Isaac Richardson and Catrell Currie.
OC fought back though and took its first lead at 19-18 when Kyle Tefft scored off an assist from Jeff Crocker with 9:02 to play in the half. The bucket was part of a 12-2 run that saw the Eagles pull away for good.
OC finished the half with a 37-30 cushion after David Jackson banked in a half-court shot at the buzzer. The Eagles made 8-of-11 first-half three pointers, thanks largely to 3-of-3 outputs from both Crocker and Jackson.
OC extended its lead to double digits for the first time when Tefft scored at the 16:15 mark of the second half to make it 44-33. The pesky Rangers – who were picked fifth in the league's preseason poll – cut the Eagles' edge down to five points by the 14:24 point, but never came closer.
The Eagles swelled their lead to as many as 18 points in the second stanza on their way to the 12-point win. OC has now won 11 of its last 14 games against NWOSU and holds a 27-15 edge in the all-time series.
Only five OC players scored on Monday night, but double-figure games from Crocker (19 points), Jason Taylor (19 points), Jackson (15 points) and Tefft (11 points) were enough. Chad Endres was the only other Eagle to score with five points.
Crocker and Jackson both finished the game 5-of-7 from three-point range. Taylor notched a team-high six rebounds to go with three steals.
OC forced 14 NWOSU turnovers and committed just five of their own. The Eagles finished the game 12-of-21 (57 percent) from beyond the arc. The Rangers were 12-of-25 (48 percent).
The Eagles reenter non-conference play their next time out at the Texas Wesleyan Classic on Friday and Saturday. OC challenges No. 15 Texas Wesleyan – fresh off a 63-46 win over No. 7 Oklahoma Baptist – at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles then play Paul Quinn (Texas) at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
