SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (Jan. 3, 2009) – John Brown (Ark.) scored 23 second-chance points off of 22 offensive rebounds on its way to a 74-70 upset of No. 10 Oklahoma Christian Saturday.
JBU, led by Davaughn Jackson's 18 points and 13 rebounds, outboarded OC 42-26 overall in winning the nip-and-tuck battle in front of 500 fans at Murray Sells Gymnasium.
Oklahoma Christian held a 41-39 edge after a back-and-forth first half that featured three ties and eight lead changes.
Jon Jonnson helped give the Eagles the early advantage, scoring off two putbacks and a three-pointer to stake OC to a 19-13 lead.
A Jason Taylor layup and Chad Endres trey gave OC its biggest lead of the half at 24-16 before JBU answered with an 11-0 flurry to go up 27-24.
Jonsson ended the run with another three-pointer, tying the game 27-27 with 3:43 left in the period.
It looked like OC might take control heading into halftime after a Jeff Crocker three-pointer and Endres traditional three-point play gave the Eagles a 41-36 lead, but Cody Page hit a long trey just before the buzzer to cut OC's advantage to two points at the break.
Oklahoma Christian maintained the lead over the first 10 minutes of the second half, but couldn't shake the Golden Eagles, who went on top 54-53 with a Page three-pointer.
JBU extended the bulge to 65-58 behind seven points from Jarrett McGriff and a transition layup by Wes Brown with 4:56 left.
A Taylor jumper and Crocker trey quickly made it 65-63, then Crocker drove for a runner and converted a free throw after he was fouled on the shot to slice JBU's lead to 67-66 with 1:09 to play.
But the Golden Eagles converted 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to clinch the upset victory.
JBU improved to 3-2 in Sooner Athletic Conference play and 10-3 overall while OC fell to 3-1 in the league and 10-2 overall.
Crocker (19 points), Taylor (16 points) and Jonsson (12 points) scored in double figures for the Eagles. Page and Abel Galliguez both tallied 13 points to join Jackson in double digits for JBU.
Oklahoma Christian returns home Monday for a top-10 showdown with No. 5 Rogers State (Okla.). The game tips off at 8 p.m. in the Eagles' Nest.
