WACO, Texas (Feb. 24, 2009) – It took a walkoff sacrifice fly for Baylor to sneak past Oklahoma Christian in the first game of a doubleheader at Getterman Stadium on Tuesday.
Baylor – the No. 24 team in NCAA Division I – beat Oklahoma Christian 5-4 in the opener before taking a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Lady Eagles (2-4) scored first in game one thanks to a four-run third inning. Tracy Washam brought home Christin Dobbs with a RBI fielder's choice before back-to-back doubles by Casey Brady and Amy Urbanovsky made it 4-0 OC.
The Lady Eagles held on until the sixth inning when BU (12-3) tied it at 4-4 with a two-RBI triple from Brette Reagan. Then in the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Bears got a leadoff walk from Sydney Wilson, then after a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, Wilson made it home just in front of Dobbs' throw from centerfield for the win.
Linzi Farris started for OC and held BU's lineup in check all game long. She gave up a pair of unearned runs in 4.0 innings while striking out two. Leigh Leonard (1-2) got the loss in relief with 2.2 innings of work and three runs allowed (two earned).
Urbanovsky – who hails from nearby China Spring, Texas – went 2-for-3 at the plate with a RBI in her homecoming. Canady (1-for-4), Brady (1-for-2, two RBIs) and Deidre Chatigny (1-for-3) completed the Lady Eagles' five-hit effort.
The Lady Eagles hung with BU in the second game as well. With the game scoreless through two innings, the Lady Bears finally broke the ice with a run in the third before two-run outputs in the fourth and fifth.
Caitlin Matthies worked 4.0 innings for OC and gave up three of the scores. The Littleton, Colo., sophomore allowed three hits and struck out one. Fellow Coloradoan Sophia McKean came on the fifth inning and pitched the final two frames where she gave up two runs on four hits.
BU outhit OC 7-2, as Washam (1-for-3) and Chatigny (1-for-1) posted the only knocks for the Lady Eagles.
OC falls to 2-7 all-time against BU after beating the Big 12 Conference member in 2004 (3-2) and 1999 (5-1).
The Lady Eagles look to bounce back on Thursday afternoon at Mid-America Christian (Okla.). OC and MACU will start their twinbill at 2 p.m.
