OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Nov. 10, 2007) - Oklahoma Christian lost to Oklahoma Wesleyan 73-66 Saturday to fall to 1-2 on the season. OWU connected on 13 three-pointers to improve to 2-0.
OC sophomore post Jason Taylor scored a career-high 24 points in the loss. The Edmond, Okla., native was 7-of-11 from the field. He also snatched eight rebounds.
OC trailed 66-62 with under 30 seconds left when OWU's Steve Briggs buried a deep three-pointer to up the lead to seven. The three was Briggs' eighth of the day en route to a game-high 32 points.
OC and OWU played through 11 lead changes and two ties in the opening stanza. OC took its biggest lead of the game at 11-6 when Taylor took a long outlet pass in for two at the 15:08 mark.
With 1:04 on the clock, Kyle Tefft connected on a pair of free throws to give OC a 33-31 edge at the break. Taylor scored 12 first-half points to go with five rebounds.
The Eagles increased the lead to five less than three minutes into the second half when freshman Jeff Crocker scored off the glass to make it 38-33. But a Briggs three-point connection at the 13:41 mark lifted OWU back into the lead at 43-40.
OC was unable to reclaim the advantage from there. The Eagles cut the lead to one point on three occasions and two points on three occasions, but could not get over the hump.
OWU hit four free throws in the game's closing 19 seconds to seal the win. The setback is just the third Homecoming loss in 25 years under head coach Dan Hays.
Crocker finished with a career-high 14 points to go with five assists. Tefft finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. OWU was 13-for-33 from three-point range. The Eagles were just 7-of-25.
The Eagles take a quick breather before playing Hillsdale Baptist (Okla.) on Monday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. The Eagles host the OC Sleep Inn Classic this weekend with games against Texas College and Southeastern Oklahoma State.
