LUBBOCK, Texas (Jan. 10, 2008) – Oklahoma Christian fell 66-59 to Lubbock Christian Thursday in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Kyle Tefft netted a career-best 27 points in the loss. The junior was 10-of-16 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range.
"Kyle was outstanding tonight, he stepped up and was huge for us," OC head coach Dan Hays said. "We just have to continue to work and get better. Tonight we weren't good enough to win."
LCU jumped out to a 10-0 lead Thursday and OC did not score until Tefft's putback with 15:54 on the clock.
OC clawed back in it with a John Powell free throw and Tefft three pointer to cut the lead to 10-6.
LCU scored at the 14:22 mark before Darrick Matthews stole a pass and drew an intentional foul on the other end. Matthews hit 1-of-2 free throws to ignite a 19-5 OC run.
A Jon Jonsson triple narrowed the deficit to 18-16 with 7:34 left and Jeff Crocker's driving conventional three-point play at the 6:55 mark gave the Eagles their first lead of the night at 19-18.
OC held the lead through the rest of the half and extended it to as large as eight. A late 5-0 LCU charge brought the halftime tally to 26-23.
LCU went on a 9-0 run from the 15:59 to 13:25 marks of the second half to take a six-point advantage at 39-33. OC cut the lead down to four six times over the next five minutes.
The Eagles finally cracked the egg further when David Jackson buried a three pointer from the wing to cut the lead to 55-54 with 3:41 left.
OC and LCU traded a pair of two's over the next 1:44, before LCU's Tommy Lane hit a three in the corner to up the Chaps' edge to 62-58.
OC drew the tally back to 62-59 on a Tefft charity toss, but LCU converted 4-of-4 free throws in the final 28 seconds to earn the win.
OC fell to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. The Chaps improved to 8-5 and 2-4.
Tefft's 27 points bettered his previous career high of 24 points vs. Texas College on Nov. 16.
Jason Taylor added nine points and seven rebounds while Jackson finished with eight. D.J. Cameron led LCU with 17 points while Lane and Bernardo Rocha added 13.
OC heads to Wayland Baptist on Saturday for a 3 p.m. game.
