Stingy defense keys Eagle victory

The Oklahoma Christian University men's basketball team won its first Sooner Athletic Conference game of the season defeating Wayland Baptist University 73-58 here Thursday.

Oklahoma Christian, ranked 28th in the NAIA, is now 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the SAC.

Wayland Baptist scored first, but the 2-0 lead would be the Pioneers' only one of the night. OC led by as many as 18 in the game.

The Eagles went on a 15-0 run in the game's opening seven minutes to take a 15-2 advantage. Freshman Jason Taylor's putback at the 13:32 mark gave OC its first double-digit lead of the contest at 13-2.

OC's tandem of Marlon Word and Kyle Tefft held WBU All-American Kendall Webb, the SAC's leading scorer, to just 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting from the field.

For the game, the Eagle defense forced the Pioneers into a 34 percent shooting effort. The Eagles shot 48 percent in the first half and 43 percent for the game, including 83 percent from the foul line.

Senior Charles Baldwin paced the Eagles with 18 points while Keith Harris added 16. Micah Miles added 10 points along with nine rebounds. Nottley and Tefft each finished with eight.

The Eagles take the floor next on Jan. 6 at 3 p.m. as they host Lubbock Christian University (Texas).
