OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Nov. 6, 2007) - The Oklahoma Christian University Eagles opened their home schedule in style Tuesday night with a 64-46 win over Texas Wesleyan University.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 12-4 lead behind six points from Lionel Saban, a pair of baskets from Jason Taylor and a layup by Jared Mitchel.
"It was good to get out to quick start," OC head coach Dan Hays said. "The crowd jumped in right away. They were really noisy."
The visiting Rams pulled within four points on three occasions, the last time at 21-17. But Oklahoma Christian scored the next 11 points to open up a 32-17 advantage. A Kyle Tefft three-pointer and back-to-back treys from Jon Jonsson keyed OC's run.
The Eagles led 32-20 at halftime, and quickly extended the lead to 44-22 just three minutes into the second stanza. Jeff Crocker sparked the run with a three-pointer and Tefft added six more points as OC broke open the game.
The Rams (0-1) didn't threaten again until Dalane Finley's conventional three-point play pulled them within 58-46 with 3:29 left. But Jonsson answered with a long-distance trey to clinch the victory.
Jonsson (13 points) and Saban (11 points) led a balanced scoring attack for the Eagles. Crocker scored 10 points, Tefft totaled nine points and eight rebounds, and Jason Taylor scored seven points and grabbed nine boards.
Finley led the Rams with 17 points and seven rebounds. OC's defensive pressure held Texas Wesleyan to just 1-of-20 shooting (5 percent) from three-point range and 32 percent overall.
"I thought it was a good team effort," Hays said. "We're still figuring things out. We have a new offense, a new defense and new personnel. But I was really pleased tonight."
Oklahoma Christian evened its record at 1-1 leading into Saturday's Homecoming game against Oklahoma Wesleyan. The game tips off at 3 p.m. following the Lady Eagles'1 p.m. showdown with ninth-ranked Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.).
