Kendre Talley had five points and six assists in OC's 78-58 loss to Wayland Baptist.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 2, 2012) – Isaiah Jackson scored 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting and Wayland Baptist shot a sizzling 58.7 percent from the field to upset Oklahoma Christian 78-58 on Thursday night on Dan Hays Court in the Eagles' Nest.
OC (14-8, 8-7 Sooner Athletic Conference) lost its fourth home game of the season, all to SAC foes, and never led after the opening 6½ minutes against Wayland Baptist (10-12, 4-10).
OC's standout 6-foot-10 post player, Will Reinke, dealt with foul trouble for much of the game and before fouling out with 2:37 left. He had only 11 points and four rebounds in 24 minutes of action, but he still led the team in scoring as the Eagles shot just 33.3 percent (22 of 66) from the field.
"Frankly, they just beat us in all areas," OC coach Dan Hays said. "I don't think we had one player who played well. I know I didn't coach well. Sometimes these things just happen, where everything goes wrong. Let's give (Wayland Baptist) some credit. I told people all week long that a lot of people think (WBU has) the second-best talent in the league. They made a believer out of me. They made shots and we didn't make shots."
Nothing Hays tried worked against the Pioneers, who built a 14-point first-half lead before taking a 37-26 halftime advantage. Hays received a technical foul – his first of the season – from a game official as the teams exited the court.
Wayland Baptist built its lead to 59-39 on a 3-pointer by T.J. Jacobs with 10:06 left and the Pioneers led 64-44 with 6:35 left.
Reinke ignited a brief OC run, stealing the ball at one end of the court and dribbling to the other end before throwing down a powerful dunk while being fouled with 6:04 left. He hit the ensuing free throw to start an 8-2 spurt that closed the gap to 66-52 with 4:58 left, but the Pioneers answered with a 13-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer by George Williams that made it 78-53 with 1:10 left.
"We just got whipped tonight," Hays said. "I really don't have an explanation why. We just got outplayed at every position. … We've just got to get to the next game."
Brandon Troutman and Willie Harper added nine points each for OC while Kendre Talley had five points and six assists. Wayland Baptist outrebounded the Eagles 38-26 and got eight points and 10 rebounds from Robert Curtis.
Williams and Jacobs each scored 14 for the Pioneers.
OC will host Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
