OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Feb. 19, 2011) – The Oklahoma Christian men's basketball team pulled away from Wayland Baptist University (Texas) at home in the Eagles' Nest on Saturday afternoon with a commanding 82-58 victory.
As the first period started, Andre Vaughn put up a basket in the paint to give the Eagles the first lead. OC's Chad Endres quickly followed with a trey to put the Eagles up 5-0 just over a minute in.
The Pioneers responded, however, quickly tying things up a minute later. Over the next five minutes, the two squads pushed back and forth through three more ties and two lead changes.
With 12:53 showing on the clock, the Eagles were tied up at 14-14 before OC headed on a 12-0 run to lead 26-14 with 7:17 till the half.
A basket from the Pioneers two minutes later broke the Eagles' run before OC further expanded their lead to 19 with nine unanswered points. A final trey from WBU closed the OC gap to 16 before the teams headed in for half time.
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Eagles pushed the lead to 20 when Jeff Crocker gave way to a Vaughn score in the paint.
Over the next several minutes, the Eagles held a lead of nearly 20 points until with 11:08 to play, OC put up seven unanswered points to take a 28-point lead at 63-35 with 10:04 on the clock.
The Eagles did not allow the WBU men within 23 points from that moment on and pushed the lead to 30 with 5:19 left to play.
WBU made several efforts to cut away at the OC gap, but the Eagles refused to let up and held a 24-point lead when the buzzer sounded to take the 82-58 win.
Vaughn led the Eagles from the field with 17 total points while Eric Randall and Brandon Troutman registered 15 and 13 points, respectively. Endres contributed down low with eight points and six rebounds.
The win improves the Eagles to 16-11 on the season and to an even 10-10 for conference play. The OC men will join the women for their final game at home on Thursday when they host Saint Gregory's University (Okla.). The women's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the men's directly following at 8 p.m.
