OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Feb. 17, 2011) – The Oklahoma Christian men's basketball team held on late in the game against Lubbock Christian University (Texas) on Thursday night and came out on top 62-59 in the Eagles' Nest.
Two back-to-back three pointers from the Lubbock Christian men put the Eagles at an early 6-0 deficit before OC put together a 12-0 run in response to lead 12-6 with 14:56 on the clock.
Minutes later, a trey from OC's Brandon Troutman put the Eagles ahead by seven with 12:27 left till the half.
With 10:40 to go, the Chaparrals began a 9-1 run to take a one-point lead over the Eagles with 8:18 left to play. The Eagles quickly retaliated, however, as they managed an 8-1 run in response to regain a six-point advantage with 2:44 to play.
After a basket from the Chaps, OC's Will Reinke and Andre Vaughn put up back-to-back baskets in the paint to take an eight-point lead into the half at 30-22.
The Eagles kept things going when the second half started, as they pushed the gap to 10 points less than three minutes in. Despite the authoritative lead, the Chaps managed to put together an 8-0 run minutes later to come within one point of the Eagles.
After OC put the margin back at five points quickly thereafter, the LCU men hit two subsequent baskets, including a three pointer, to tie things up at 49-49 with 8:12 left to play.
Following the tie, the Eagles put up 10 unanswered points to lead 59-49 with 5:33 remaining till the buzzer. Directly following, the Chaps responded with five points of their own to come within reach at 59-54 with 3:44 on the clock.
In retaliation, OC's Eric Randall drove a basket up the lane and drew the foul four a three-point play, to put the Eagles up by eight with three minutes left. As the game came to a close, the Chaps managed two baskets, including a last minute three, to close the Eagle lead to three points at 62-59.
As the final 30 seconds ticked away, the Chaps were unable to find the basket leaving the Eagles the victors.
Reinke led the Eagles for the evening with a double-double performance scoring 18 points and making 12 rebounds. Reinke also tallied three assists and three blocks. Also contributing from down low was Randall who put up 17 points for the game.
Vaughn and Devan White made helpful contributions as well with Vaughn recording nine points and White registering seven points and nine rebounds.
The win improves the Eagles to 15-11 overall and to 9-10 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The OC men will join the women as they stay home to host Wayland Baptist University (Texas) on Saturday. The games are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
