Distance runners Schwab, Meyers named as LSC Scholar-Athletes

RICHARDSON, Texas (June 16, 2022) – Distance runners Caroline Schwab and Colton Meyers were recognized Thursday as Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete Award winners from Oklahoma Christian.

Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at member institutions. These student-athletes are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the academic year.

To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and be a member of the graduating class.

Schwab, from Andover, Kan., just finished her junior season of eligibility in both cross country and track and field but already has earned her bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-Med from OC. She twice has been named to the prestigious Academic All-District team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Schwab has appeared on the Lone Star Conference or Heartland Conference academic Honor Roll six times and is a two-time recipient of the Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award.

During the just-completed outdoor track and field season, she twice broke OC's school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, lowering the mark to 11:21.63. She earned All-LSC third-team honors with a third-place finish in the steeplechase in the LSC Outdoor Championships last month in Kingsville, Texas.

She finished her cross country career in November with a career-best 6,000-meter time of 24:00.0 in the South Central Region Championship race in Lubbock, Texas, and she finished 48th (in a 127-woman field) two weeks earlier in the LSC Championship race in Lawton, Okla.

In 2020-21, she placed 10th in the LSC indoor mile, 17th in the outdoor 800 and 30th in the LSC cross country race while qualifying for the Division II National XC Invitational.

During 2022-23, Schwab will attend Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, Okla., as she pursues her dream of becoming a physician.

Meyers, from Allen, Texas, has earned a slew of athletic and academic awards during his five seasons running for the Eagles, during which he's earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, both in Finance, from OC.

He's twice been recognized as a U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic individual honoree, most recently for this past cross country season. He was named to the LSC All-Academic team for indoor track in 2020 and for both indoor and outdoor track this year.

Meyers is a two-time recipient of the Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award and has made either the Lone Star or Heartland Conference academic Honor Roll eight times. He also was named to the Great American Conference's Academic All-Conference list in 2019, when OC competed as an affiliate member of the GAC.

In competition, he's a four-time all-conference honoree in cross country, earning that recognition from the Heartland in 2018 and from the Lone Star in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He was an All-GAC first-team selection in indoor track and field in both the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters in 2019 and was an All-GAC second-team honoree in the outdoor 10,000 meters in 2019.

This season, he earned All-LSC second-team honors outdoors thanks to a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters and a seventh-place showing in the 5,000 meters in the LSC Championships, held last week in Kingsville, Texas.

Meyers also has served as a representative for men's cross country on the OC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
