Schwab earns 2nd Academic All-District honor

AUSTIN, Texas (May 26, 2022) – For the second straight year, Oklahoma Christian distance runner Caroline Schwab appeared on the Academic All-District list for women's cross country/track and field, which was announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The CoSIDA honor recognizes student-athletes for their combined athletic and academic prowess and is considered one of the most prestigious in collegiate athletics. To qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.3 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, have reached sophomore status athletically, have legitimate athletic credentials and have been at the nominating institution at least one calendar year.

Schwab, from Andover, Kan., graduated in April with a bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-Med, having posted a 3.762 GPA. She's appeared on the Lone Star Conference or Heartland Conference academic Honor Roll six times and is a two-time recipient of the Division II Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award.

In competition, she's posted consisted year-over-year improvement for the Eagles. During the current outdoor track and field season, she twice broke OC's school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, lowering the mark to 11:21.63. She earned All-LSC third-team honors with a third-place finish in the steeplechase in the LSC Outdoor Championships earlier this month in Kingsville, Texas.

She finished her cross country career in November with a career-best 6,000-meter time of 24:00.0 in the South Central Region Championship race in Lubbock, Texas, and she finished 48th (in a 127-woman field) two weeks earlier in the LSC Championship race in Lawton, Okla.

In 2020-21, she placed 10th in the LSC indoor mile, 17th in the outdoor 800 and 30th in the LSC cross country race while qualifying for the Division II National XC Invitational.

She is the 15th OC track and field athlete to receive an Academic All-District honor and the fourth since the university began competing at the NCAA Division II level, joining Aubree Hughes (2017), Rachel Meyers (2019) and Leisa VanVooren (2019).

Only four other OC track and field student-athletes have twice made an Academic All-District team – Kathy Nelson (1996-97, 1997-98), Diana Hall (2002-03, 2003-04), Lita Clendenen (2004-05, 2006-07) and Charlotte Heron (2007-08, 2008-09).

Schwab now will advance to the ballot for the Academic All-America team for track and field and cross country, which will be selected through a vote of sports information directors from NCAA Division II schools in the U.S. and Canada. That list will be announced next month.

During 2022-23, Schwab will attend Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, Okla., as she pursues her dream of becoming a physician.
