ADDISON, Ill. (April 18, 2022) – For the first time in the four-season history of Oklahoma Christian's club program, the Eagles will be represented in both of collegiate bowling's two men's championship events this week.
C.J. Petrin will compete in the Intercollegiate Singles Championship, which will begin Tuesday at Stardust Bowl, and then will join seven of his OC teammates starting Thursday for the Intercollegiate Team Championship at the same site.
Petrin, a freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn., is the second OC player in as many years to qualify for the ISC, joining teammate
Josh Imhoff, who advanced to the round of 16 in the 24-man event last year.
Petrin advanced to the ISC field by
posting the top score among 179 men competing in the ISC Sectional Qualifier at USA Bowl in Dallas last month. Although it remains unclear if that counts as an official tournament win, it was the second time this season Petrin finished atop the standings in an event, as he won the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Circuit II tournament title on Oct. 3, also at USA Bowl.
He enters the ISC ranked No. 22 nationally in scoring average at 209.371 over 62 games, having posted six (or seven) top-10 finishes.
On Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., the 24 ISC contestants will roll six games of qualifying for seeding purposes. The top eight will receive a first-round bye for match play, which will begin Tuesday at 2 p.m. Two more rounds of match play will be held on Wednesday, starting at 7:30 a.m., with semifinal matches scheduled to start Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
Coach
James Hayes' Eagles qualified for the ITC for the first time thanks to
a third-place finish in the Sectional Qualifier in Dallas. Joining Petrin on the OC roster will be
Mitchell Leonard,
Leotis Johnson Jr.,
Trey Maloy,
Jake DeVoe,
Dalton Smith,
Israel Reveles and
Nathan Curnutt.
ITC play will begin Thursday at 8 a.m. with qualifying, consisting of 24 Baker games. The results of qualifying will set the bracket for a 16-team double-elimination tournament, in which teams will play best-of-seven matches.
The first two rounds of match play will be played Thursday, starting at 4 p.m. Five or six more rounds of match play are scheduled for Friday, with the title match set for Saturday.
The Eagles should be familiar with the Stardust Bowl facility, as they played there in the Tier I Kegel/ISBPA Midwest Collegiate Classic on Jan. 15-16. OC finished 15th among 68 teams in that event.
