STILLWATER, Okla. (Sept. 18, 2021) – Oklahoma Christian downed one NCAA Division I program and nearly a second on Saturday morning as the Eagles took a step up in competition, racing in the annual Cowboy Jamboree on the Oklahoma State University Cross Country Course.
Fourteen of the 18 teams entered in the race were Division I squads and OC, with 444 points, beat Missouri-Kansas City and finished just 10 points behind Oklahoma, even though the Eagles were without three of their projected top five runners. OC placed 16th overall.
OC's
Colten Brown and
Colton Meyers, who ran 1-2 in the Aggie Duels in Lawton eight days earlier to lead the Eagles to the win in that Division II race, again posted strong efforts. Brown, a sophomore from Boise City, placed 64th in the 187-man field, covering the 8,000 meters in 25:28.2. He passed 34 runners between the 5,000-meter and 7,000-meter marks.
Meyers, a senior from Allen, Texas, finished 79th with a time of 25:51.7 after steadily working his way forward during the race.
The next three OC runners finished in short order – freshman
Griffin Chesire of Eldoret, Kenya (152nd in 28:27.6), freshman
Cade Berkey of Hydro (156th in 28:46.6, in his first collegiate race) and freshman
Christian Fair of Stillwater (159
th in 28:55.0). Sophomore
Kolten Johnson of Lewisburg, Tenn., finished 167th in 30:11.6 and sophomore
Austin McNair of Denton, Texas, did not finish the race.
"
Colten Brown and
Colton Meyers really ran well out front for us again this week," OC coach
Wade Miller said. "We still need to close the gap to them with our pack for our team to be successful. We have work to do but should continue to get better each week."
Isai Rodriguez of Oklahoma State was the individual winner, posting a time of 23:05.8, while Northern Arizona took the team title with a score of 41.
OC's next race will be Oct. 2, when the Eagles will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the annual Chile Pepper Festival.
